Southeastern Region

The territory of the region includes the districts of Burgas, Sliven, Yambol and Stara Zagora. To the east the region is bordered by the Black Sea, to the north – by Central and Eastern Stara Planina, to the south it reaches the Strandzha Mountain, the Derventski Heights and the Sakar Mountains. Here fall the eastern part of the Upper Thracian Plain, part of the Sub-Balkan valleys, the Burgas Lowland and part of the Sredna Gora – Sarnena Mountain.

The region's free access to the Black Sea determines its favorable transport, natural and economic situation. The region is predominantly lowland and low-mountain, which facilitates communications between settlements and creates favorable conditions for the development of tourism and cross-border cooperation. 

Among the most famous natural and cultural sights in the area are: 

  • Strandja – mountain massif along the border between Bulgaria and Turkey, famous for its unique vegetation
  • Mineral waters of Pavel Banya, Stara Zagora Mineral Baths, Sliven Mineral Baths, Pomorie and others. 
  • City of Burgas – an important center of sea tourism with links to the resorts of the Southern Black Sea coast, birthplace of famous cultural figures in Bulgaria
  • Lakes Atanasovsko, Pomoriysko, Mandra and Burgas, forming the largest complex of seaside lakes in Bulgaria with exceptional biodiversity. Via Pontica, one of the main migration routes for European migratory birds, passes here.
  • Ropotamo Reserve – home to over 50% of the animal and plant species of Bulgaria, with dense forests and unique rock formations
  • Sozopol: an ancient city located on the Black Sea coast and known for its rich history and culture
  • Nessebar – Old Nessebar is the historical treasury of Bulgaria. Because of its unique color, the city is included in the UNESCO list. Nessebar is the only Bulgarian town – World Cultural Value.
