Northwestern Region

The northwestern region of Bulgaria is rich in natural and historical landmarks and an attractive camping destination.

The region covers the northwestern parts of the country and includes the districts of Vidin, Vratsa, Lovech, Montana and Pleven. It is bordered by Romania to the north and Serbia to the west, to the east it is bounded by the Iskar River and to the south by the ridge of the Balkan Mountains.
The topography of the region is diverse and includes the Danubian lowlands, the Danube Plain, the Pre-Balkans and the Western Stara Planina. 

Car connections with Sofia and the Southwest region pass through the Petrohan Pass and the Iskar Gorge and Botevgrad. The railway connections are on the line Sofia – Mezdra.

Some of the most popular natural and historical landmarks in the Northwest region include:

  • Belogradchik Rocks – one of the most beautiful rock formations in Bulgaria and Belogradchik Fortress – a historical monument of culture; 
  • The caves "Rabisha", "Ledenika" and "Magura" – one of the largest caves in Europe with a rich history and culture;
  • Midzhur Peak – the highest point in the region (2168 m);
  • Danube River – the largest river in Bulgaria and the second longest in Europe;
  • Baba Vida Fortress – the only fully preserved fortress in Bulgaria;
  • Okolchitsa area – the place of death of the poet-revolutionary Hristo Botev;
  • Mineral springs in Varshets, with a water temperature of up to 36-38 degrees;
  • Multiple dams – suitable for water sports and recreation;
