Southcentral Region

The South Central region is located in the southeastern part of Bulgaria and covers the districts of Kardzhali, Pazardzhik, Plovdiv, Smolyan and Haskovo. It is an attractive center for business and investment and with many opportunities for tourism. 

The region is bordered by the North-East region to the north, the South-East region and the border with Turkey to the east, Greece to the south and the South-West region to the west. It includes a large part of the Central Balkan National Park, part of the Rila National Park and the entire massif of the Rhodope Mountains. 

On the territory of the region there are 20 reserves, 155 protected areas and 98 natural landmarks. Here are located: 

  • Rhodope Mountains – the largest mountain massif in Bulgaria with rich flora and fauna
  • The centuries-old beech forests in the Central Balkan National Park – included in the UNESCO list
  • The meanders at Kardzhali dam – picturesque curve of the Arda River in the form of a horseshoe
  • Dospat Dam – a real paradise for connoisseurs in the westernmost part of the Rhodope Mountains

Among the historical and cultural cities and landmarks in the region are city of Plovdiv – the second largest in Bulgaria, with a rich history and culture, Architectural Reserve Asen's Fortress – a preserved medieval town located on a hill above Asenovgrad, Velingrad with many mineral springs, Zlatograd's ethnocultural area – inhabited for millennia and others.

There are various forms of tourism offered in the region:

  • Mountain and eco tourism: with many opportunities for walking, getting to know the local flora and fauna, trekking, rock climbing, fishing and camping..
  • Historical and cultural tourism: in order to get to know Bulgaria's past
  • Ski tourism: The Rhodopes are a popular destination for ski tourism, offering ski resorts such as Chepelare and Pamporovo
