Southwestern Region

This is the most developed region in Bulgaria. It covers the districts of Sofia, Sofia, Pernik, Kyustendil and Blagoevgrad and includes parts of Stara Planina, Rila, Pirin, the Rhodope Mountains and the Sofia valley. 

The region is characterized by a leading industrial industry, important transport corridors and basic functions in the socio-economic life of the country. 

The most popular natural attractions include:

  • Rila National Park – the largest in Bulgaria with more than 100 peaks over 2000 m, over 120 glacial lakes, among them the famous 7 Rila Lakes, 4 reserves, waterfalls and exceptional biodiversity
  • Mount Musala (2925 m) – the highest peak in Bulgaria and on the Balkan Peninsula 
  • Iskar Dam – the largest dam in Bulgaria
  • Pirin National Park – priceless Bulgarian and world treasure, part of the Man and Biosphere program of UNESCO. The park includes more than 50 peaks over 2500 m and about 170 glacial lakes, reserves with unique plant and biological diversity
  • Vihren peak (2914 m) – second in Bulgaria and third on the Balkan Peninsula. 
  • The natural landmark "Baykusheva fir" – more than 1300 years old, one of the oldest trees in Bulgaria
  • Sofia valley – the largest valley in Bulgaria, with rich history and culture

There are a variety of opportunities for tourism, including:

  • Mountain tourism in Rila, Pirin and Rhodope Mountains
  • Cultural and historical in Sofia, the Rila Monastery, the Rozhen Monastery, the Architectural Reserve Melnik, the area of Rupite near Petrich and many others
  • Ski and Spa Tourism in Bansko, Borovets, Pamporovo, Sapareva Banya and others.
